We all thought we’d seen the worst of winter storms last year in the infamous “Snowpocalypse 2011”. I guess we were wrong. The stories and picture proof that the white monster has made a 2012 comeback are popping up everywhere.
Winter runs from (approximately) Mid-December to Mid-March. We aren’t even halfway through it. Should we buckle down in the hopes that it doesn’t get worse? Or should we rejoice in that the worst is almost over? Only time will tell. For now, we need to face the cold reality that we are in the dead of winter. Let’s go with it.
Dam Burst – Write a piece (fiction or non-fiction) in which your character is experiencing the worst part of winter.
Wet Feet – Your prompt will be slightly different than the Dam burst prompt. The last “chilling” prompt (the first frost) had you describe your character’s sensations and the changes of scenery that occur under the spell of the first frost. For this prompt, we want you to imagine that your character has never experienced a hard winter. Maybe they are from somewhere perpetually warm? Maybe they have only experienced a light dusting once or twice? Those details are up to you. To help you capture the moment, think of a time when you may have been stuck in the cold, ill-prepared, for an extended period of time. You can also reference news stories online for Alaska this year. From what we hear, they are catching some record snowfall.
*Note – We’re not asking you to kill anyone off. Just capture this moment as someone’s first in hard conditions.
We link our stories back up on Thursday the 19th at 6PM Mountain (US).
If this is your first prompt, it is great to have you here! Let us know if you have any questions about the link-ups or anything else. We’re here for you.

Firstly, thank you for the prompt. It got me started on a story I’ve been meaning to write for a couple of years. Secondly, I’m barely through the set up and it’s 1,400 words — well over the 600 limit. Maybe I’ll share an excerpt in next week’s free link-up. By the way, it is Snowpocalypse here. Seattle is shut down with blizzards and ice storms — my family’s been snowed in all week. Good call on the Dead of Winter.
Alexis, thank you for the comment. We enjoy it when people find inspiration they need through our work here on Story Dam. Getting us writing is the primary goal, so whether it’s in a response to a prompt, or as in your case, writing that story you’ve been wanting to, we have both become successful.
No worries if you can’t link-up. I would rather see you get your story written any day of the week.
As for the snow, is that not crazy?! I have some friends in that area. They’ve been sharing pictures on Facebook – it looks like you guys got HAMMERED up there! Stay warm and be safe!
