This is not a pleasant post to write and I am sure not pleasant to read but it must be said. I have been downloading a lot of free books from indie authors to read and hopefully to review. Unfortunately I don’t like to give a bad review. I like to say how much I have enjoyed a book, what I enjoyed about it and whether it is something I will enjoy returning to over the years to revisit like an old friend.
Seriously, did you put this much energy into writing your book and then were too afraid to ask someone to beta read or edit it? Or did you just have family look at it?
I know this fear, I struggle to share my work especially to beta readers, editors, and reviewers. What if they hate it? What if they tell me that I should stop writing and get a day job?
First off most people aren’t going to say that. In fact they will probably tell you how you can make your book better. BETTER. Why wouldn’t you want to do that?
I had three beta readers for my poetry book, Dancing within Shadow, but I couldn’t afford to pay for an editor. I understand struggling, living pay check to pay check and not being able to pay for all the services a successful writer/author needs. I was lucky enough that at least one of my beta readers is/was a teacher and she took the time to give me tips on smoothing it out and making it better.
After I download your book, I hopefully begin to read. Usually in the first paragraph I know whether it is going to be something I will continue reading or hit the back button to click “Remove from your Device” button. So far I haven’t returned any ebooks but I am seriously considering it.
What I am hoping is that you will take another look and ask for some help. Ask every person that has a descent education if they would beta read your book if you can’t afford an editor. Make sure they understand that you are open to any and all helpful advice for your book and then use that advise to make your book better.
And next time you write a book, have some patience at the end of it. I know you want to publish it as soon as possible, I do to. But wait, WAIT, before you hit that publish button and get as many people reading it as possible and work with their suggestions to make your book the best it can be.
Oh and if you haven’t read, Building Your Book for Kindle, I highly recommend it. It’s free and it is a wealth of good information for putting your book together.
Now go work on your book. And, if you think my book needs more work let me know.
Thank you for commenting and sharing before you leave.
